2 Men Killed in Multi-Vehicle Car Accident on 605
Earlier this morning, two men died in a pileup on the 605 freeway in Los Angeles. A young woman initiated the series of crashes after she struck the center divider. The 18-year old told officers that she was trying to change lanes, but right as she did, she saw a car. She got back into her own lane, but there was also a vehicle in front of her so she slammed on her brakes. As she did, her Honda Civic began to skid and lose control. Authorities are now determining if there were any defects with her car that would cause her brakes to lock up.
The young woman was able to get out of the car and run over to the side of the freeway, yet her car was left in the traffic lanes. Minutes later, a 60-year old man driving a Chrysler 300 slammed into the wrecked vehicle. Unfortunately, he died on impact. A couple minutes later, another car crashed into the wreckage, being driven by a 67 year-old man who also died on the scene. A driver with an Acura came by a little later and was able to avoid the wreckage, yet in so doing his car rolled over. The last vehicle to crash into the wreckage was a 26-year old male, making a total of 5 vehicles in the pile-up.
None of the three drivers who survived show any signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs, and the two men who died are in the process of being tested. Police officers are questioning why none of the drivers noticed the wreckage, as visibility was fine that night. All lanes of the freeway were shut down so that the accident could be investigated.
