As Los Angeles dog bite attorneys, our firm frequently sees dog bite injuries from a variety of breeds. While it’s clear that owners play an extremely important role in their dog’s behavior, some breeds are naturally more aggressive and capable of injury than others. The following five breeds are some of the most dangerous, based on annual attack and death statistics.
1. Pit Bull
The American pit bull terrier is perhaps the most notorious of all dog breeds. They are banned in many communities, and always seem to be at fault for any newsworthy dog attack. Many dog enthusiasts claim that pit bulls have are unfairly classified as aggressive – this may or may not be true, but it is undeniable that their strength and jaw size makes them potentially lethal to any human.
If pit bulls are the most dangerous dog breed, then Rottweiler’s are certainly in second place. Just as with pit bulls, there are conflicting opinions about how aggressive this breed naturally is. However, they are commonly trained as guard dogs, and their sheer size and strength makes them a potentially lethal threat to kids and adults.
3. German Shepherd
German Shepherds ted to be active and highly intelligent dogs, and are generally much happier when they have a job and can socialize frequently. This is why they are ideal choices for police dogs, but it makes them a poor choice for novice dog owners. Oftentimes, owners will allow a puppy to develop bad habits, which makes the dogs aggressive and territorial in adulthood.
Bullmastiffs can be extremely mild-mannered and gentle dogs, but they can also be stubborn and aggressive toward people and other animals. Their sheer size makes them extremely confident, and they are unlikely to back down once they become agitated. If they are not properly trained from a young age, bullmastiffs can cause serious injury even by accident.
5. Doberman Pinschers
Doberman pinschers were originally bred as guard dogs, so it is unsurprising that they tend to be highly suspicious and aggressive toward strangers. Modern Dobermans can be very friendly with proper training, but this breed can certainly attack if it is stressed or unhappy.
